For most overseas candidates, one video call stands between them and a Canadian job offer. Employers on the other end have usually been burned before โ by inflated resumes, coached answers, and candidates who vanished after arrival. Your job in the interview is to be the opposite of that experience.
1. Research like you already work there
Know the employer's locations, menu or product line, busy seasons, and clientele. "Why do you want to work for us?" answered with specifics โ not "because Canada is a beautiful country" โ instantly separates you from the pile.
2. Answer with evidence, not adjectives
"I'm hardworking" is noise. "In my last role I covered a six-day station solo through the wedding season, and my sous chef can confirm it" is signal. Every claim should attach to a fact someone could verify โ which conveniently is also what IRCC wants from your paperwork.
3. Fix your technical setup
Test the connection, camera, and microphone the day before. Sit somewhere quiet with light on your face, not behind you. Log in five minutes early. A frozen, echoing call doesn't just annoy โ it makes "can this person handle a busy service?" harder to answer in your favour.
4. Be honest about limits
If you haven't used a specific system or worked a specific station, say so and explain what you'd do to learn. Employers sponsoring an LMIA are committing months and real money to you โ they'd rather hire an honest 8/10 than discover a dishonest 10/10 was a 5.
5. Ask questions that show you're serious
Ask about the team you'd join, accommodation options, winter conditions, and the training period. Candidates who ask nothing look like candidates applying to a hundred jobs at random.
One more: never let anyone "sit in" and answer for you, and never use scripted answers word-for-word. Employers interview dozens of coached candidates โ authenticity is rarer and more valuable than polish.
After the interview
A short thank-you email the same day, restating your interest, keeps you memorable. If an offer follows, the immigration work begins โ our work permit guide covers what happens next.
