Every Express Entry candidate gets a Comprehensive Ranking System score out of 1,200. Invitations go to the highest scores in each draw — so the difference between waiting forever and receiving an ITA is often 20–40 points. The good news: scores aren't fixed. Here's where the movable points actually live.

How the 1,200 points break down

  • Core human capital (up to 500): age, education, first-language ability, Canadian work experience
  • Spouse factors (up to 40): their language scores, education, and Canadian experience
  • Skill transferability (up to 100): combinations — strong language plus strong education, foreign experience plus strong language
  • Additional points (up to 600): provincial nomination (600), French ability, Canadian study, a sibling in Canada

Lever 1: retake the language test

Nothing moves scores like language. Crossing from CLB 8 to CLB 9 unlocks the skill-transferability combinations — often 50+ points from a single retest. Lever 2: count your spouse properly

Couples routinely leave 20–40 points on the table by ignoring the lower-profile spouse. A spousal language test and an educational credential assessment are cheap relative to the points they add — and sometimes the "weaker" spouse scores higher as principal applicant. Run both configurations before deciding.

Lever 3: claim all your education

Two credentials assessed (say, a degree plus a diploma) can outscore one. If you never had your second qualification evaluated through an ECA, you may be sitting on free points.

Lever 4: the 600-point override

A provincial nomination adds 600 points — effectively a guaranteed ITA. PNP streams target specific occupations and often lower thresholds; for candidates stuck in the low 400s, the provincial route is usually the honest answer. Our PNP guide maps the options.

Lever 5: French

Strong French (NCLC 7+) adds up to 50 points directly — and francophone candidates get their own category-based draws with dramatically lower cut-offs. If you have any French foundation, developing it is a legitimate strategy, not a gimmick. Details in our francophone pathways article.

What doesn't work: fake job offers, purchased LMIAs, and misrepresented experience. Misrepresentation carries a five-year ban. Every point above is available honestly.
